I’ve had a hard time writing lately. I’ve been busy, of course, but that’s not the reason. I still haven’t gotten a feeling for the main character in the Wolves of Ossery so I’m changing gears. Over the past month I’ve kicked the tires of a few ideas and settled on something I didn’t see coming.
Last weekend I was at Stellerfest with my buddy Bob McGough, author of The Jubal County Saga. Long story short we talked the whole weekend about his world and the prospect of me writing in it. I’m officially announcing in this newsletter that I’m starting a new project. It’s set in the world of the Jubal County Saga.
Here in the south there’s some old timey magic that people used to do called whispering burns. If you got a bad burn you could go to a witch. They would whisper something to the burn and the pain would go away. I’m told my grandmother’s sister could do it but she stopped because she was afraid it was some kind of devil worship. I took this premise and used it as the basis for my new series. It’s going to be a Horror/Urban Fantasy/Southern Gothic series. The story is about a country wizard named Talmer Fish. He uses everyday country items for his magical tools. I wooden spoon is his wand for example.
To perform magic he whispers words of power. These words pull magical energy from cosmic horrors. He whispers because if he were to get the attention of these entities he’s siphoning power from, they could show up and that would be disastrous. A worst case scenario would be like waking up Cthulhu.
I have enough ideas for nine books already and I’ve gotten started on book one already. I’ll be posting chapter one to my Patreon as soon as I send tis out if you’d like to check it out.
